Developments in the Iran-Israel tensions suggest a potential attack on an Iranian nuclear facility might be near. The Israeli Defense Minister Katz has hinted that the timing may be favorable due to the Iranian nuclear site’s reduced defenses following the depletion of the S-300 missile defense system. According to reports from Iran International, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has raised this issue with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has urged neighboring countries, including Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and Saudi Arabia, to intervene.
In anticipation of a possible Israeli strike, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has placed all its units on high alert, preparing for countermeasures by land, sea, and air. Additionally, Iran’s Interior Ministry has issued a nationwide security alert.
Syria intensifies efforts to counter Israel
Syria has intensified efforts to counter Israel, with the IRGC preparing its allied proxy groups for potential large-scale conflict. Meanwhile, recent airstrikes near Damascus have angered Syria, which is now actively working with Iran to rally Muslim nations and its allies against Israel. Syria has also accused Western countries of openly supporting Israel.
In response to Israeli airstrikes in Syria, Iran has issued a severe warning, with an Iranian diplomat urging unity against Israel during a meeting with a Turkish official. Iran has also cautioned against Israel’s expansionist actions in Syria, while U.S. attacks on proxy groups across Syria, including recent airstrikes near Sana’a, have further raised Iran’s concerns.
Israel’s warning to Syrian President
Israel has issued a final warning to Syrian President Assad. The recent strikes on nine Iranian militia sites, which the U.S. Central Command claims were in retaliation for attacks on its base, have escalated tensions. Alongside strikes from the U.S. and the UK, Israel has warned Assad to halt weapons supplies to Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have threatened to target Nasrallah similarly if these supplies continue. Syria has been Iran’s closest ally since the 1980s.
Israel-Iran war
Since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023, the Israeli military has been involved in cross-border clashes with Hezbollah. On September 17, a coordinated attack triggered the simultaneous explosion of thousands of pagers in the southern suburbs of Beirut and other Hezbollah strongholds, with many devices detonating after receiving an incoming message.
The pager attack, followed by a second strike the next day involving weaponized walkie-talkies, resulted in 39 deaths and over 3,400 injuries.
Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu claimed responsibility for the operation during a cabinet meeting. He revealed that while senior defense officials and political figures opposed the detonation of the pagers, he decided to proceed with the attack.
Hezbollah fighters had been using pagers as a low-tech communication tool to avoid Israeli tracking. Pagers are wireless devices that receive and display messages.
