New Delhi: US President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday, November 13, according to a senior official. The meeting is set for 11 a.m., as announced by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
“At President Biden’s invitation, President Biden and President-elect Trump will meet in the Oval Office on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Additional details to follow,” Jean-Pierre wrote on X.
Meetings between the outgoing and incoming presidents are a tradition intended to symbolize the peaceful transition of power in American democracy, as reported by CBS News. However, following the 2020 election, Trump did not extend this courtesy to Biden after losing his bid for re-election.
Donald Trump will assume office of the President on January 20.
On Tuesday, Trump secured the presidential election with a minimum of 301 electoral college votes, exceeding the required 270 to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, previously the 45th president, will be the second individual to serve two non-consecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland, who was the 22nd and 24th president.
In his initial public address following the election setback on Thursday, President Joe Biden conveyed to his fellow Democrats that everyone gets knocked down, but the true measure of character is ‘how quickly one rises again’. Additionally, the President shared a message for the Republicans, albeit without mentioning them by name.
“You can’t love your country only when you win. You can’t love your neighbour only when you agree, something I hope we can do, no matter who you voted for, see each other, not as adversaries, but as fellow Americans, bring down the temperature,” he said.
Biden has stated that the American electoral system is robust, trustworthy, and transparent, which stands in contrast to the narrative President-elect Donald Trump and his allies have promoted among American voters since the 2020 election. “I also hope we can later restate the question about the integrity of the American electoral system. It is honest, it is fair, and it is transparent and it can be trusted, win or lose.”
President Biden delivered a brief address from the White House, lasting just over six minutes, with a definitive message aimed at reducing the tensions in a politically polarized nation. “Campaigns are contests of competing visions. A country chooses one or the other,” he said.
The President stated that he had congratulated President-elect Trump and assured that the transfer of power would occur peacefully on January 20, as is tradition. Although not mentioned, Trump, feeling hurt and angry about his 2020 defeat, did not attend Biden’s inauguration and instead departed directly for his home in Florida.
Biden also had a word of praise for Harris.
“She’s been a partner and a public servant. She ran an inspiring campaign, and everyone got to see something that I learned early on to respect her character so much. She has a backbone like a ram. She has great character, true character. She gave her whole heart and effort, and she and her entire team should be proud of the campaign they ran,” the President said.
Harris was propelled into the presidential race in July when Biden had to withdraw after a catastrophic debate with Trump. She took over Biden’s campaign and resources, but she managed to build her own campaign in just over three months.
