New Delhi: Qatar has withdrawn itself as one of the key mediators for a Gaza ceasefire agreement. The primary reason for the withdrawal cited is the lack of “serious intent” from both Hamas and Israel, preventing any substantial progress in the negotiations, according to a Reuters report quoting a diplomatic.
“Qatar will halt its efforts to mediate a Gaza ceasefire agreement until Hamas and Israel show a genuine willingness to return to the negotiating table,” the official said to Reuters. The official also mentioned that Qatar has concluded that Hamas’s political office in Doha no longer serves any purpose.
Qatar has been working relentlessly for several months to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza and secure the release of Israeli civilians taken hostage by Hamas since October 7, 2023. Qatar is working along with the Unites States and Egypt.
A report by Associated Press quoting another official, if both sides demonstrate a “serious political will,” there is a possibility that Qatar’s mediation efforts could be resumed.
This decision has also been communicated to Israel, Hamas, and the United States. This announcement makes it clear that there was a sense of frustration in Qatar’s efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement. Recently, talks held in mid-October also ended without resolution, as Hamas rejected the proposed short-term ceasefire.

America has informed Qatar that, following the recent proposal’s rejection, Hamas’s presence in Doha is no longer acceptable, especially given the lack of concrete progress toward a ceasefire and hostage agreement. This information was shared by an US official.
