The interim government of Bangladesh is not in mood to mend ties with India which were strained in the past few months after the student movement in the country that led to former PM Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. She had to flee the nation. It seems that the interim leader Muhammad Yunus too is not keen to strengthen the India-Bangladesh relationship.
Yunus did not utter a single word when his close aide talked about annexation of parts of India. He did not scold his minister who ordered the nation’s Army to take on India at the border. He did not take any concrete steps to stop attacks on Hindus in the country. Now, the Bangladesh government has sought extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
We are going to discuss what Bangladesh has done and why India has not taken it well.
Attack on Hindus
The major issue was the attack on Hindus. According to MEA reports, as many as 2200 cases were registered in connection with atrocities against Hindus. It is 10 times worse than the atrocities that have taken place in Pakistan.
Friendship with Pakistan
The new interim government wants to mend its ties with Pakistan. Leaders of both the nations met in Egypt. Pakistan’s containers were welcomed at the port of Chittagong which is a cause of worry for India. Now, the Pakistani Army will provide training to Bangladesh’s Army .
Revival of SAARC
Bangladesh wants to revive SAARC despite knowing that India is not in favour. This step is seen as Bangladesh’s anti-India move.
Wants to end Diplomatic ties
A protest was staged outside the Bangladesh High commission in Agartala which upset the country and it summoned the Indian envoy to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma. It also recalled two of its diplomats.
Extradition of Sheikh Hasina
The Bangladesh government has sought extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Despite the nation knowing that India would not let this happen. It seems that Bangladesh deliberately wants to defame India.
These could be reasons
The people of Bangladesh were unhappy with Sheikh Hasina, knowing that India always backed her, which they believed contributed to her becoming a dictator. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus wants to maintain his popularity and he is not making an effort to help people understand the situation but instead stokes local sentiments. India has neither used Sheikh Hasina as a strategic tool nor does it aim to destabilise the country. India has already clarified that it recognises Sheikh Hasina as a former Prime Minister and has initiated talks with the interim government. On the other hand, experts believe that Yunus seeks to retain power for the long term.
