Pakistan Army vs Bangladesh Army: The Bangladesh Army is younger than the Pakistan Army as it was created after the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, when the country separated from Pakistan and became an independent nation. However, despite being only 53 years old, and not having fought a proper war since its creation, the Bangladesh Army has achieved a unique identity at the global scene and ahead of its Pakistani counterpart– which is 77 years old, the same as Indian Army– in several key areas.
Let us find out why Bangladesh Army is superior to Pakistan Army in some aspects.
Despite not having fought any wars since its inception, the Bangladesh Army and the Bangladesh Police have been actively involved in several UN Peace Support Operations (UNPSOs), which gives the country’s armed forces global exposure to various scenarios across varied conflict-ridden states in different parts of the world, since 1988.
According to reports, Bangladesh has been the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, contributing 6,500 soldiers, the highest by any individual country, till the end of 2023.
Surprisingly, Nepal is the second largest contributor to UN peacekeeping forces, with 5,800 Nepalese soldiers deployed on UN missions, while around 5,500 to 6,000 Indian Army personnel are deployed with the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces (UNPKF).
Additionally, Bangladesh also ranks higher than Pakistan in terms of paramilitary troops, taking the top spot, while Pakistan sits at the 6th spot. In fleet strength, Bangladesh is ranked 30th with 117 while Pakistan is at the 32nd spot with 114 units.
However, in all practical cases, the Pakistan Army is likely light years ahead of the Bangladesh Army, in almost every strategic aspect such as military spending, technology, as well as strength. According to various estimates, Pakistan Army has around 6,54,000 active military personnel, making it one of the largest standing armies in the world, while Bangladesh’s active military strength is around 2,04,000, less than a third of Pakistan.
Apart from this, Pakistan is big on military spending, allocating a a defense budget of Rs 2,122 billion ($7.64 billion), for the financial year 2024-25, which is 1.7% of its GDP. In contrast, Bangladesh’s defense budget is just Rs 423.6 billion ($3.6 billion), an increase of 11% from last year, but still much lower than Pakistan or India for that matter.
Pakistan Army has participated in several conflicts, including fighting wars with India, while Bangladesh Army has never fought any wars, but instead focused on internal stability and regional peacekeeping.
