Islamabad: To upgrade and strengthen its naval force, Pakistan is set to acquire advanced submarines from China, as revealed by Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf in an exclusive interview with Global Times. According to Admiral Ashraf, the submarines, developed under the China-Pakistan collaboration, will soon join the Pakistan Navy. Praising the Chinese-built ships and submarines, Ashraf stated that this development would further enhance naval cooperation between the two countries. Notably, both Chinese and Pakistani navies have participated in joint exercises such as ‘Sea Guardian’ and ‘Aman.’ Work on the Type 054A/P frigates and Hangor-class submarines is progressing rapidly, with these vessels expected to bolster the Pakistani fleet soon. This growing naval strength of Pakistan could raise concerns for India.
Delivery of Type 054A/P Frigates
As per the Global Times, all four Chinese-built Type 054A/P frigates have been delivered to Pakistan. These frigates are loaded with all necessary modern weaponry and are among the Dragon’s finest. The frigates are equipped with high-tech sensors, modern weaponry, CM-302 surface-to-surface missiles, LY-80 surface-to-air missiles, advanced anti-submarine warfare suites, and a combat management system. All these upgrades allow these frigates to operate effectively in multi-threat scenarios.
China-Pakistan Collaboration on Submarines
In addition to warships, China and Pakistan are jointly developing eight Hangor-class submarines. These subs are loaded with the latest weaponry, sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. not only that, these war machines of sea can stay underwater longer and operate quietly, offering a strategic edge.
In 2015, Pak signed a deal with the Dragon, agreeing to build four submarines in China and four in Pakistan.
It is to be noted that the delivery of these powerful subs is scheduled between 2022 to 2028, Ashraf stated. He also mentioned in the interview that the Hangor-class submarines will significantly enhance Pakistan’s naval capabilities, offering stealth, mobility, and firepower to conduct diverse operations.
Implications for India
India has recently advanced, expanding and modernising its naval fleet. Recently, the Indian Navy commissioned its first indigenously built aircraft carrier in 2022. Meanwhile, its two nearby threats—Pak and China are also strengthening their naval forces. Ashraf also, without naming India, spoke about the readiness of the Pak Navy and assured of giving a befitting response to any conflict, describing it as a balanced and battle-ready force.

Experts suggest that Pakistan’s purchase of Chinese submarines could represent a possible risk to India. The improvement of Pakistan’s submarine capabilities may compel India to invest considerable resources to preserve its superiority in maritime security.
