Relations between India and Bangladesh are steadily worsening. The BSF has planned to build a fence along the Bangladesh border to prevent illegal immigrants from entering India. Bangladesh has strongly objected to this move. In response, India summoned the Bangladeshi ambassador to New Delhi on Monday and made it clear that Bangladesh must adhere to agreements made during previous governments.
Under the leadership of the interim government headed by Mohammad Yunus, following the removal of Sheikh Hasina’s government, tensions have been rising between the two countries over even minor issues. Neighboring China is aware of this situation and is taking advantage of it. China is actively engaging with political parties in Dhaka to influence the situation.
According to a report by Bangladesh’s Daily Observer, on Monday, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen met Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in Dhaka. Currently, Bangladesh is under the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, which came to power after Sheikh Hasina’s government was overthrown. Extremist forces have grown stronger in the country, and there is growing opposition to Hasina’s Muslim League. Khaleda Zia’s BNP is considered a strong contender for power, with elections likely to be held later this year. Observing the changing political landscape, the Chinese ambassador is working on future strategies in Dhaka.
Khaleda Zia’s party, BNP, has consistently taken an anti-India stance. In contrast, Sheikh Hasina’s government has been inclined towards fostering strong ties with India. During the G20 Summit in Delhi, Prime Minister Modi personally introduced Hasina to global leaders. A selfie of Hasina with Joe Biden from the event had also gone viral.
China is well aware that the BNP is not supportive of India. Recently, BNP leaders organized anti-India protests, during which they burned Indian-made products like saris and other items, further showcasing their opposition.
Yunus’s anti-India stance
Yunus’s anti-India stance could pose a significant challenge for India, as China aims to strengthen its ties with Bangladesh’s new government and bring it into their Belt and Road Initiative. If this happens, it could spell trouble for India.
Regarding the meeting with the Chinese ambassador, BNP’s media cell stated that the leaders discussed issues of mutual interest. A post on the Chinese embassy’s Facebook page confirmed that the Chinese ambassador met with the BNP Secretary General, and both sides exchanged views on matters of shared concern. Earlier, on August 21 last year, the Chinese ambassador had also met a BNP delegation led by Mirza Fakhrul at the BNP chairman’s Gulshan office.
