The recent dreadful airstrike by Pakistan in Afghanistan’s Paktika province has ignited global outrage against Islamabad. According to reports, the airstrike claimed as many as 46 lives, including women and children. The attack was widely condemned worldwide, with Afghanistan issuing a stern warning to Pakistan. Meanwhile, India has clarified its stance and voiced strong support for Afghanistan, sharply criticizing the Shehbaz Sharif-led government for the attack. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs made statements that are likely to unsettle Pakistan. Furthermore, New Delhi’s backing of Afghanistan in this matter is believed to have a connection to Bangladesh.
India’s Condemnation of Pak Over Dreadful Airstrikes
New Delhi has condemned Pakistan’s airstrikes in Afghanistan, with MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal saying that Islamabad has a long-standing habit of blaming neighbours for its internal failures.
“We have taken note of media reports regarding airstrikes in Afghanistan, which resulted in the deaths of several civilians, including women and children. India strongly condemns any attacks on innocent civilians,” he said.
Why India Criticised Pakistan
India’s recent stance on the ongoing skirmish between the Taliban and Pakistan reflects its commitment to regional stability and peace. By supporting Afghanistan, India not only reinforced its position but also sent a sharp message to Pakistan.
The criticism also has roots in Pakistan’s increasing interference in Bangladesh, which is closely monitored by New Delhi.
Growing Pakistani Influence in Bangladesh
Several reports suggest that Pakistan is fuelling anti-India campaigns in Bangladesh. This interference intensified after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government last year, following widespread protests. Subsequently, Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country, paving the way for an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. However, this political shift has seen a rise in attacks on Hindu minorities and temples in Bangladesh, prompting India to raise concerns multiple times.
Why India Prioritised Afghanistan
India’s not-so-good relations with Pakistan and its longstanding ties with Afghanistan played a crucial role in its decision. Over the years, India has invested in numerous development projects in Afghanistan and extended support to its people.
Afghanistan, however, has deepened its relationship with India. In this context, India’s sharp criticism of Pakistan over the airstrikes highlights its commitment to supporting the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan while addressing regional challenges.
