Dhaka: India has started fencing its border with Bangladesh in the Sukhdevpur area of Malda district, West Bengal. This has sparked tensions between India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The BSF began installing the fence on Monday, prompting objections from the BGB. However, the BSF dismissed these concerns, stating that the fencing is being constructed within Indian territory.
Notably, the fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border is progressing steadily.
According to The Hindu, a senior BSF official confirmed that the work of installing fencing is proceeding smoothly. He admitted that some initial misunderstandings happened at the ground level with the BGB, which have since been resolved.
Despite this, reports suggest that tensions are rising near the India-Bangladesh border, including protests by local residents and media reports in Bangladesh alleging land encroachment.
Notably, West Bengal alone shares a 2,216 km-long border with Bangladesh. A major portion of this remains unfenced. This unfenced border area witnesses issues like smuggling and infiltration. These problems have intensified amidst political turmoil in Bangladesh and concerns over the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Consequently, India has accelerated its efforts to secure the border.
Because of the vast and challenging terrain of the India-Bangladesh border, fencing work is very difficult. Notably, the border spans across five Indian states, and tensions have risen in recent days.
In response, BSF and BGB officials held flag meetings to address the situation.
Fortunately, no physical clashes between the security forces of the two nations have been reported, and work continues under peaceful conditions.
