US stops financial aid to all countries except Israel and Egypt; Here’s why

New Delhi: America has been providing financial help to around 180 countries around the world in some form or the other. This financial aid has been ranging from military support to humanitarian aid and economic development funds. In the year 2022, the US distributed about $64,000 crores as this aid, but now Donald Trump has announced to stop it. He says that America will continue to provide financial aid only to Israel and Egypt, and will stop this aid to all other countries.

Now the question arises as to why the US did not stop financial aid to these two countries.

Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the suspension of most foreign aid but exempted both Israel and Egypt from military aid as important allies. The US gives Egypt about $ 1.3 billion every year in military funding to maintain regional stability.

Why the U.S. will help Israel and Egypt financially

The US stopped financial aid to the whole world, but kept Israel and Egypt out of it, given its interest in the Middle East and the strategic importance of these two countries. The United States gives Israel about $ 3.3 billion annually.

This financial aid is also related to military aid. In 1979, Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel, which gave Israel the assurance of Egypt that it would not act on it in this volatile region. It also helped strengthen Middle East American influence. US military assistance to Egypt supports its efforts to fight extremism and maintain internal security, which is critical to both national stability and the broader fight against terrorism in the region.

Regional Stability: Both countries play an important role in maintaining stability in the Middle East. The US considers military assistance important to counter the threats from Iran and various terrorist groups, so that these countries can deal with all types of terrorism.

Peace Agreement: US military aid to Egypt is closely linked to the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, which has been a cornerstone of regional peace since it was signed in 1979. The relationship helps prevent hostilities between Arab states and Israel, thereby contributing to broader regional security.

How Egypt benefits from U.S. aid

  • U.S. military aid strengthens Egypt’s armed forces, allowing them to work effectively with U.S. military units.
  • This aid helps in the modernization of the Egyptian army, helping it to acquire advanced weapons and technology.
  • The military assistance strengthens a strategic partnership between the US and Egypt, which is vital to US interests in the Middle East. Egypt’s cooperation is crucial for U.S. logistics and military operations in the region, particularly with regard to access to the Suez Canal and the overflight routes used by U.S. forces.
  • The aid also supports Egypt’s internal security apparatus, helping to maintain order amid political unrest and social challenges.

How old are the relations between Egypt and the United States?

Relations between Egypt and the United States are more than 100 years old. Egypt was liberated from British control in 1922, when diplomatic relations were formally established between it and the United States. The United States recognized the sovereignty of Egypt.

However, under President Gamal Abdel Nasser (1956-1970), Egypt took a pro-Soviet stance, which strained its relations with the US.

Later, after the arrival of President Anwar Sadat, these relations of the 1970s started to improve again. Meanwhile, in 1978, the Camp David Agreement was signed, in which a peace treaty was signed between Egypt, the United States and Israel. This was a significant shift in relations with the US.

Continued financial help to Egypt

President Hosni Mubarak continued to strengthen ties with the US, receiving more than $71 billion in military and economic aid. It is still going on. Egypt remains an important ally for U.S. interests in counterterrorism and regional stability.
