Dhaka: Bangladesh Navy Chief Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan has arrived in Pakistan on an official visit. He visited the Pakistani Army headquarters in Rawalpindi on Friday and met with Pak Army Chief Asim Munir. Chief Admiral Hassan also held a crucial meeting with Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza. The visit reflects improving diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan in recent months. Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, Bangladesh is focusing on strengthening relations with Pakistan, while its ties with India have become strained.

Discussions on Defence and Regional Security

As per Pak media, Admiral Hassan discussed mutual interests, regional security, and defence cooperation with top Pakistani military officials. Notably, this marks the second high-level visit of Bangladeshi armed forces to Pakistan in recent weeks. In January, Major General Shahid Amir Afsar from ISI, along with a delegation of senior officials, visited Dhaka. Amid the evolving regional security dynamics, this engagement holds major importance for Bangladesh-Pakistan relations.

China’s Growing Influence

According to regional experts, China is also playing a major role in strengthening ties between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Bangladesh imports nearly 72 percent of its military equipment from China and its closer relations with Pakistan could further enhance China’s influence in the region.

The relationship holds strategic importance considering the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Gwadar Port connectivity, this relationship holds strategic importance.

Dhaka is planning to acquire 16 new warships by 2030, making training and technology transfer from Pakistan a crucial factor.

Bangladesh Seeking Diplomatic Support from Pakistan

Amid the political turmoil and other internal tensions in Bangladesh, it is seeking Islamabad’s diplomatic support. Admiral Hassan, during his visit, praised Pak’s contributions to regional peace and stability. He also lauded Pak’s upcoming multinational naval exercise, Aman 2025.

India Monitoring Situation

India is paying close attention to the growing defence relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Soon, military collaboration between these two countries is anticipated to increase, potentially impacting regional security and stability. Furthermore, both nations may also work together on matters such as the Rohingya crisis, which could influence India’s strategic interests in the area.
