Nepal was once a Hindu nation, but after the abolition of the monarchy and the introduction of democracy, it was officially declared a secular country. In India’s neighboring Hindu-majority country, Nepal, the latest census report shows a slight decline in the population of Hindus and Buddhists over the past decade, while the number of Muslims and Christians has grown. Islam is now the third-largest religion in Nepal.
As per the 2021 census, Nepal is home to approximately 1.5 million Muslims, accounting for 5.09% of the total population. In contrast, the Muslim population was 4.39% in 2011, reflecting an increase of around 0.69% over the decade.
The Muslims living in Nepal are descendants of ancestors who migrated from different parts of South Asia to this Himalayan nation. Since then, they have been a minority among the Hindu and Buddhist majority.
Ethnically, most Muslims in Nepal are not native Nepalis; they share cultural and linguistic similarities with the Muslim communities of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India. The majority of Nepal’s Muslim population is concentrated in the Terai region, while others primarily reside in Kathmandu, Gorkha, and the western hills.
According to a report in News18 Hindi, several districts have a significant Muslim population, including Sarlahi (around 10%), Rautahat (approximately 18%), Bara (around 12%), and Parsa (about 18%). Additionally, Banke, Kapilvastu, Mahottari, and Sunsari also have a notable Muslim presence.
The 2021 census report published by Nepal’s Central Bureau of Statistics reveals that Hinduism is the dominant religion in the country, with 81.19% of the total population identifying as Hindus. This translates to approximately 23.7 million people, reported News 18 Hindi.
Buddhism comes second, with around 2.4 million followers, making up 8.2% of the population. Islam, with roughly 1.48 million followers, ranks third, accounting for 5.09% of the population. The report also indicates a slight decline in the Hindu and Buddhist populations over the past decade, while the Muslim, Christian, and Kirat populations have seen an increase. Over the last 10 years, the Hindu population decreased by 0.11%, and the Buddhist population dropped by 0.79%.
According to the data, Islam saw an increase of 0.69%, Kirat by 0.17%, and Christianity by 0.36%. In the 2011 census, Hinduism accounted for 81.3% of the population, Buddhism for 9%, Islam for 4.39%, Kirat for 3.1%, and Christianity for 0.1%.
Christianity is the fifth-largest religion in the country, with approximately 512,000 followers, making up 1.76% of the total population. The indigenous Kirat religion ranks fourth with 3.17% of followers. Among the ten religions followed by Nepali people, the smaller ones include Nature worship, Bon, Jainism, Bahá’í Faith, and Sikhism.
Nepal is a diverse linguistic country with 124 languages spoken. Nepali is the most widely spoken language, used by 44% of the population. Maithili follows with 11.05%, while Bhojpuri is spoken by 6.24%. Tharu is spoken by 5.88% of the population, and Tamang is spoken by 4.88%.
