Islamabad: Bankrupt Pakistan is facing the worst economic crisis in recent times. The country has experienced a financial crisis as part of the 2022 political unrest. It has caused severe economic challenges for months, due to which food, gas and oil prices have risen. As of 1 February 2025, the Pakistan inflation rate recorded 2.4 percent lowest in 9 years. Though, Pakistan lags behind in different indicators but is far ahead when it comes to birth rates.
According to a United Nations report, by 2050, Pakistan will surpass the United States in population and become the world’s third-most populous country. This comes despite a significant decline in birth rates over the past three decades in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Fertility Rate Stands at 3.6
Pakistan’s fertility rate in 2024 is 3.6, according to the United Nations World Fertility Report 2024. However, it has dropped considerably compared to Pakistan’s own fertility rate in 1994. In 1994, the country’s total fertility rate per woman was 6, meaning each woman, on average, gave birth to six children.
Pakistan Set to Become the Third Most Populous Country
Pakistan is set to become the world’s third most populous country by 2050, surpassing the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, and Russia. When Pakistan was formed in 1947, its population was 31 million, which has now grown to 241 million according to the 2023 census.
Pakistan’s population will exceed 380 million by 2050, the United Nations estimates. Additionally, the fertility rate is expected to decline further, reaching 2.5 by 2054. The report further adds that in 2024, Muslim-majority countries such as Pakistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo accounted for 43 percent of global births.
