Turkey is planning to establish two military bases in Syria. These bases are expected to house F-16 fighter jets, and according to reports, Turkey and Syria will soon sign a joint defence agreement. Under this agreement, Turkey will be obligated to defend Syria in the event of war.
What’s in the Defence Agreement?
According to the agreement, the Turkish military is also going to train the Syrian army. Additionally, the Turkish Air Force is preparing to deploy as many as 50 American-made F-16 fighter jets in Syria.
The Turkish Government plans to establish several radar stations in Syria, creating a buffer zone between Israel and Turkey. This simply means that any Israeli fighter jet passing through Syrian airspace would be detected by Turkey.
Turkey’s Support for Syrian Rebels
It is noteworthy that Turkey has actively supported Syrian rebels during recent coups. Several reports claim that Turkish military commandos fought alongside the rebels against Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Additionally, the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan-led government also provided intelligence, weapons, and other military supplies, empowering rebels to overthrow Assad’s rule in less than 10 days and take control of Syria.
Why Does Turkey Want a Military Base in Syria?
Turkey’s establishment of a military base in Syria is intended to fulfil several strategic goals. This base would enhance resources for operations against Kurdish insurgents in Syria, enable Turkey to monitor Israel, extend its influence over Syrian rebel groups, and counter the forces supported by the United States.
