Tel Aviv: In the latest development in the Israel-Hamas war, Tel Aviv has agreed to a proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, for a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during Ramzan and Passover. The decision was made as the first phase of the ceasefire nears its end, Al Jazeera reported. The proposal for the temporary ceasefire aims to ease ongoing tensions in the region during these holy months. However, details on its implications are yet to be disclosed.
The Muslim community across the world welcome the holy month of Ramazan with prayers and fasting but uncertainty still hovers around Gaza as echoes of war still linger, despite the ceasefire agreement.
Residents of Gaza continue to hold vivid memories of previous conflicts. One individual reflects on their experience of Ramadan during the 2014 war, describing how they had to escape airstrikes at night as a child, according to Al Jazeera. However, the circumstances last year were even direr. Food was limited, and families often broke their fast with minimal provisions—sometimes just a single can of hummus or beans divided among six individuals. With no electricity available, they shared their meals in darkness, struggling to see one another’s faces.
According to Al Jazeera, the echoes of war still ring loud. There is no certainty that this ceasefire will last. People are anxious about what happens next. They fear the war may come back.
Now, as another Ramzan begins, many in Gaza remain uncertain about what lies ahead.
Meanwhile, thousands of Israelis are protesting on Begin Street in Tel Aviv, demanding the release of the remaining captives in Gaza and the completion of the second phase of the ceasefire deal.
Hamas has rejected Tel Aviv’s proposal to extend the ceasefire. “Israel is trying to reset the situation to zero by mixing the cards,” Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem told Al Araby TV. It has also slammed and criticised Israel for not considering the full withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas initiated a major assault on Israel, which became one of the most lethal attacks in the nation’s history. The attacks started in the early morning with the launch of thousands of rockets from Gaza aimed at Israeli cities and towns. Subsequently, Hamas breached the Israeli border using vehicles, paragliders, attacking military installations and civilian areas, particularly in communities adjacent to the Gaza Strip.
The attackers engaged in mass shootings, kidnappings, and other violent actions, resulting in hundreds of fatalities among both civilians and military personnel. More than 200 individuals, including both Israelis and foreign nationals, were abducted and taken into Gaza. In response to the attack, Israel declared war on Hamas, leading to widespread airstrikes and a ground invasion of Gaza.
On October 7, 2023, at least 1,139 individuals lost their lives in Israel. This attack marked the most lethal day for the country in many years and has led to a continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas, resulting in significant casualties for both parties and a critical humanitarian situation in Gaza.
