In a major source of worry for world peace, tensions are once again escalating between two long-standing rivals from Asia and Europe — Armenia and Azerbaijan. Both of these countries have been locked in a bitter conflict since their inception and the two nations have fought multiple wars too. Now, with hostilities threatening to erupt once more, reports suggest that Armenia may turn to Indian-made weapons to strengthen its defense, adding a new dimension to the brewing conflict in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Readers must note that Armenia is one of the biggest purchasers of weapons from India and it has been continuously purchasing weapons from India over the last decade. A per a report by Defense Ministry report, the military cooperation between India and Armenia’s capital Yerevan is constantly growing and in the last four years, Armenia has emerged as the largest importer of weapons from India.
For an example, Armenia ordered 15 Akash missile systems from India for $ 720 million in 2022. Moreover, media reports also say that Armenia is also in line to procure India-made anti-tank rockets, howitzers, and anti-drone equipment under the multi-million dollar defence deals.
India aims Rs 3 lakh cr in defence production by 2029
In a significant update on India’s defence exports, the government has said it aims to achieve Rs 3 lakh crore in defence production by 2029, reinforcing the country’s position as a global defence manufacturing hub. About 65 per cent of defence equipment is now manufactured domestically, a significant shift from the earlier 65-70 per cent import dependency.
The government said it aims to reach Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029, reinforcing India’s role as a global defence manufacturing hub while boosting economic growth, as per a report by news agency IANS.
Defence exports have grown 21 times, from Rs 4,312 crore in the 2004-14 decade to Rs 88,319 crore in the 2014-24 decade, highlighting India’s expanding role in the global defence sector.
