44 Killed In Devastating Fire At Commercial Complex In Bangladesh

Dhaka: In a tragic incident that has come to light from Bangladesh, a massive fire at a commercial building claimed at least 44 lives and left over 20 severely injured. The incident took place on Thursday night on Dhaka’s Bailey Road, which houses several restaurants in the national capital, Dhaka Tribune reported. Firefighters rushed to the spot and rescued 70 people, including 42 found unconscious, from the seven-story Green Cosy Cottage. Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen, Dhaka-8 lawmaker AFM Bahauddin Nasim, and senior law enforcement officials rushed to the scene and reviewed the situation.

Sen, while addressing the mediapersons at 2 am, informed that 33 people lost their lives at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and an additional 10 at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. The Inspector General of Police of the capital city later informed about another fatality at the Central Police Hospital, bringing the total to 44 casualties.

Bangladesh Fire: 75 People Rescued

IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun informed that media that as many as 75 people had been rescued. Some of them received first aid before safely returning home, Dhaka Tribune reported.

The massive flames were brought under control around 12:30 am. Firefighters said that most victims succumbed to injuries sustained from burns, suffocation and jumping off the building.

Bangladesh Fire: Cause Of The Massive Fire

The fire broke out at a restaurant named “Kacchi Bhai” on the first floor at around 9:45 pm. The flames quickly spread to other levels where patrons were dining.

As many as 13 Fire Service units worked for hours to douse flames, with support from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), General Ansar, and Ansar Guard Battalion (AGB).

Fire officials attributed the rapid spread of the blaze to gas cylinders present in restaurant kitchens on multiple floors. The thick smoke in the staircase hampered people’s ability to exit the building promptly, contributing to the gravity of the situation, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
