New Delhi: The President of Namibia Hage Geingob has passed away at 82; he was undergoing cancer treatment. The Acting President of Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba has issued a statement regarding the same and has also appealed to the nation to remain calm and cooperate and that other announcements regarding the nation’s future will follow. Namibian President Dies At 82

As mentioned earlier, Namibian President Hage Geingob passed away at the age of 82. According to a report by Al Jazeera, the Namibian President died on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital in the capital Windhoek with his wife and his children at his side, acting president Nangolo Mbumba said in a statement posted on Geingob’s official Facebook page.

In his statement, Nangolo Mbumba said, “The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house.” He further added, “At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations and other protocols. Further announcements in this regard will be made.”

Geingob Detected With Cancer, Had History Of Health Issues

According to Al Jazeera, Geingob’s office announced last month that the African leader had begun treatment following the discovery of ‘cancerous cells’ during a routine colonoscopy and a gastroscopy. His office said a few days later he would be travelling to the United States for medical care and would return to Namibia in February. Geingob had a history of health problems that preceded his election as Namibia’s third president in 2014.He underwent an aortic operation last year in neighbouring South Africa and in 2014, he revealed that he had survived prostate cancer.

Who Is Hage Geingob?

Hage Geingob served as the first Prime Minister of Namibia and then the third President of Namibia from March 2015 until his death on February 4, 2024. Born in Otijwarongo, South West Africa, he received his early education at Otavi in South West Africa under the Bantu Education System. It was in 1972 that Geingob was appointed to the United Nations Secretariat as a political affairs officer until 1975 after which he was appointed director of the United Nations Institute for Namibia until 1989. In 1989, he was elected as the Chairman of Constituent Assembly, responsible for making the Namibian Constitution.
