Tokyo: An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude has hit Japan’s northern coast of Iwate prefecture on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday, Japan’s Meteorological Centre said. As per the preliminary reports, the earthquake was reported at 00:59 am (IST).
The epicentre of the earthquake was the northern coastal part of Iwate Prefecture, the agency said, adding that a tsunami warning had not been issued. However, there were no reports of immediate damage.
Fortunately, the first indications show that the earthquake caused no immediate injuries or property damage. However, residents reported severe tremors, which prompted preventive measures.
Japan’s cautious disaster management systems, developed over years of seismic activity, quickly mobilized emergency response teams. Transport systems were temporarily halted as authorities examined infrastructure for evidence of structural damage.
