Paris: Pavel Durov, the founder of the Telegram messaging app, was detained by French authorities at an airport outside Paris. As per a CNN report, his arrest followed the issuance of a warrant against him. According to a CNN affiliate BFMTV, Officers from France’s anti-fraud office, attached to French customs, took the 39-year-old billionaire into custody on Saturday evening after he arrived at Bourget Airport on a flight from Azerbaijan.
The French-Russian billionaire was wanted under a French arrest warrant for allegedly failing to moderate content on Telegram. This lack of oversight reportedly allowed the platform to be used for activities like money laundering, drug trafficking, and the sharing of pedophilic content. As per BFMTV, the Telegram founder had not regularly travelled to France and Europe since the arrest warrant was issued.
As per the news agency ANI report, the Russian-born founder of Telegram, who claims the platform has over 900 million users, is currently based in Dubai. In 2021, he became a naturalized French citizen. In 2014, Durov, left Russia after refusing to share VKontakte users’ data with Russian security services. Subsequently, Russia attempted, but failed, to block Telegram after Durov declined to provide users’ online communications to security authorities.
