Former US President Donald Trump criticized Google for allegedly censoring news and photos related to the Republican presidential candidate. Trump claimed that it was challenging to find any information or images regarding the failed assassination attempt on him on July 13 through Google’s platform. Despite Trump’s accusations, Google has refuted these claims, denying any censorship. “Google has been very bad. They’ve been very irresponsible and I have a feeling that Google is going to be close to shut down because I don’t think Congress is going to take it. I really don’t think so. Google has to be careful,” Trump told Fox News in an interview.
“Over the past few days, some people on X have posted claims that search is ‘censoring’ or ‘banning’ particular terms. That’s not happening, and we want to set the record straight. The posts relate to our Autocomplete feature, which predicts queries to save you time. Autocomplete,” it said in a social media post.
Google acknowledged that its autocomplete feature failed to provide predictions for searches related to the assassination attempt on former President Trump due to outdated systems safeguarding against political violence. Despite the horrific events in Butler, Pennsylvania, the anticipated queries did not surface as expected. “Once the issue was flagged, we started working on improvements, and they’re already rolling out,” it said.
Following the issue’s identification, Google promptly initiated updates, which are currently being implemented.
“Secondly, people posted about how Autocomplete wasn’t showing relevant predictions for ‘President Donald’. This particular issue was a bug that spanned the political spectrum, also affecting queries for several past presidents, such as former President Obama, as you can see in the attached image.
Typing ‘vice president k’ was also showing no predictions. We’ve made an update that has improved these predictions across the board,” it said.
Trump claims Zuckerberg apologised and pledged not to support democrats
The current Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has alleged that Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, reached out to him to offer an apology for censoring his content on the platform. Trump disclosed in an interview with Fox News that Zuckerberg not only apologized but also assured him of not supporting any Democratic candidates in the upcoming election. The Facebook CEO reportedly commended Trump’s actions, describing them as ‘amazing’ and ‘brave’.
Trump mentioned that Zuckerberg had contacted him multiple times, with one call coming after a recent event. Additionally, Trump stated that Zuckerberg expressed his admiration for Trump’s stance and confirmed his decision not to back any Democratic contenders. Trump said that Zuckerberg praised his actions, saying: “That was really amazing, it was very brave”, as reported by PTI.
Trump commented on the changes at Facebook, saying, “I think they’ve made some progress. Mark Zuckerberg has stopped doing what he did five years ago, when he spent $500 million to influence the outcome. I don’t believe he’s doing that anymore.”
