Israel launches intensive airstrikes on Hezbollah sites in Lebanon: Military sources

Israeli warplanes have launched about 60 airstrikes on Hezbollah strongholds in southern and eastern Lebanon, according to Lebanese military sources. The sources, who spoke anonymously, said that “the planes on Thursday dropped about 150 air-to-ground missiles”, adding that the casualties and damage caused by the intensive raids, “the most violent since October 8”, are not yet known, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Israeli military stated that the Air Force had targeted “100 rocket launchers, comprising roughly 1,000 barrels.”

Following several hours of intense strikes that started in the afternoon, the Israeli military announced shortly before midnight that the operation had concluded. Lebanese sources reported that approximately 50 Katyusha rockets were fired from southern Lebanon into northern Israel, news agency IANS reported.

The exchange of fire took place following two consecutive days of deadly explosions involving pagers and communication devices across Lebanon, reportedly carried out by Israel. These incidents resulted in at least 37 deaths and 2,931 injuries.

These developments represent the latest escalation in the ongoing conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border, which began on October 8, 2023, when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in solidarity with Hamas in Gaza. This prompted retaliatory Israeli artillery fire and airstrikes into southeastern Lebanon. The conflict has already resulted in significant casualties and displaced tens of thousands on both sides.
