Tehran: A day after Israel conducted aerial strikes on Iran, reports are coming in that the Persian country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was seriously ill and that a battle for succession has already begun.

The reports coming in from Tehran say that 85-year-old Ali Khamenei’s second-oldest son, Mojtaba Khamenei, 55, is seen as a likely successor amid rising tensions with Israel, says The New York Times.
The events are unfolding at a time when Iran is reportedly contemplating retaliatory strikes on the Jewish state.
Israel on Saturday, 26 October 2024 launched three-wave airstrike named “Operation Days of Repentance” on Iran in what it said was in retaliation for the October 1 missile attack.

It is believed that Israel’s next move may be to target Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Israel is now preparing to target the leadership of Iran after Hamas and Hezbollah. In such a situation, Khamenei could also be the next target.
Ali Khamenei has held the position of Supreme Leader since 1989, following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini. He is a cleric and politician who has served as the second supreme leader of Iran since 1989. He previously served as the third president of Iran from 1981 to 1989.
From 1989 to 2024, Khamenei’s 35-year-long rule makes him the longest-serving head of state in the Middle East.
After the Iranian revolution overthrowing the shah, he was the target of an attempted assassination in June 1981 that paralyzed his right arm.
As supreme leader, Khamenei is the most powerful political authority and also the head of state of Iran, the commander-in-chief of its armed forces, and can issue decrees and make the final decisions on the main policies of the government in many fields.
Regarding the nuclear program of Iran, Khamenei issued a fatwa in 2003 forbidding the production, stockpiling and use of all kinds of weapons of mass destruction.
