Hamas is reportedly moving towards appointing a five-member ruling committee instead of selecting a single leader to succeed Yahya Sinwar, who was recently killed by Israeli forces in Gaza. This interim leadership is set to govern the group until their next internal elections in March, provided conditions allow. This committee was previously formed after the assassination of political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
“The Hamas leadership’s approach is not to appoint a successor to the late chief, the martyr Yahya Sinwar, until their next elections” scheduled for March “if conditions permit,” a well-informed source from the Palestinian group told AFP.
A five-member committee that was formed in August following the assassination of political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran “will take over the leadership of the group”, The Times of Israel reported quoting sources as saying.
The committee was formed to facilitate decision-making in view of the difficulty of communicating with Sinwar in Gaza before his death.
Yahya Sinwar, who became the Gaza chief of Hamas in 2017 and later the overall leader following Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination in July, was killed by Israeli forces in Rafah last Wednesday. Sinwar was the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023, terror attacks in southern Israel, which left approximately 1,200 people dead and 251 abducted to Gaza.
In response to Sinwar’s death, Hamas has opted not to appoint a single successor. Instead, a Doha-based five-member ruling committee will lead the group during this period of war and instability. This committee includes Khalil al-Haya representing Gaza, Zaher Jabarin for the West Bank, Khaled Mashaal for the diaspora, and Mohammed Darwish, the head of Hamas’s Shura advisory council. The identity of the secretary of the political bureau remains undisclosed for security reasons.
The committee is responsible for governing Hamas, making strategic decisions, and planning for the group’s future during this crisis. Despite discussions within the group about appointing a political chief, the leadership chose to maintain governance through this committee.
