In a matter of global shock, Israel conducted a secret attack at Iran under which it damaged facilities at a secretive military base southeast of the Iranian capital. The attack is seen as very significant as experts have linked Tehran’s onetime nuclear weapons program to the region recently attacked.
An Israeli attack on Iran damaged facilities at a secretive military base southeast of the Iranian capital that experts in the past have linked to Tehran’s nuclear weapons program and at another base tied to its ballistic missile program, satellite photos revealed. In the recent attack, Israel also attacked another base which has been historically tied to its ballistic missile program as per a report by The Associated Press show.
In a statement issued after the recent attack, the Israeli military confirmed the attack and said it targeted “missile manufacturing facilities used to produce the missiles that Iran fired at the state of Israel over the last year.”
A number of damaged buildings have been identified at Parchin, a military base in Iran. The global watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), presumes that this location has previously been used for critical explosive experiments connected to nuclear weaponry.
Iran’s response to Israel attacks
Despite this speculation, Iran has consistently maintained that their nuclear pursuits are exclusively for peaceful measures. Yet, the IAEA, along with several Western intelligence bodies, counter these claims, arguing that Tehran possessed an active weapons program until 2003.
Iran’s officials have identified the areas affected and these are found in the Ilam, Khuzestan, and Tehran provinces. Pictures from the sky taken by Planet Labs PBC on Saturday reveal a landscape of burnt fields around the Tange Bijar natural gas site in Ilam province. However, we can’t be sure if this has something to do with the recent assault. If you’re not familiar, Ilam province is situated in western Iran along the border with Iraq.
No comments came forth from Iran’s delegation at the United Nations, nor did the Israeli military decide to voice their viewpoints. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while conversing with a gathered crowd, took a balanced stance on the Israeli attack. He conveyed that it should neither be blown out of proportion nor minimized. However, he held back from suggesting any immediate countermeasures. At the same time, Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, confidently stated that their assaults significantly disrupted Iran and were successful in accomplishing all intended targets.
