Lahore, which is known as Pakistan’s cultural hub, has been defamed as it has become the most polluted city in the world, with an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 394. Notably, this is not the first time that the city has topped the list; Lahore consistently ranks among the top 10 polluted cities in the world. Additionally, Delhi is also one of the most polluted cities globally, and every winter season, it is blanketed with smog, causing breathing-related problems for the people.
The soaring pollution causes health scares like persistent coughs, breathing difficulties, eye issues, and skin problems for many people. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, gives us a measure for the amount of pollutants clogging up the air we breathe. Any reading that crosses the 100 mark on the AQI is considered bad news for our health. And if it surges past 150, you can bet it’s “extremely harmful.”
The main culprits behind the smog are industrial emission, stubble burning, vehicles, and construction activities. To fight smog, the Government has launched ‘Anti-Smog Squad’ to informed and educate farmers about the methods to dispose the stubble and promote the use of super seeders.
“Yesterday Lahore was declared the most polluted city in the world. We have taken a number of initiatives to address the matter and now we are planning for an artificial rain in the city,” Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said in Lahore.
How Pakistan Government Is Fighting Pollution
- Artificial Rain: Implemented to reduce the effects of smog.
- Anti-Smog Squad: Aiming to educate farmers and encourage sustainable farming methods.
- Environmental Education: Integrated into the educational curriculum of the province.
- Climate Diplomacy: Working with India to tackle cross-border smog challenges.
Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized that the positive effects of these measures will be visible in 8-10 years, urging farmers to avoid burning crop residues, which harms both crops and children’s health.
The Punjab government has declared a war on smog, recognizing the urgent need for action. With Lahore’s AQI exceeding 150, considered “very unhealthy,” immediate solutions are crucial.
Just a few weeks ago, Maryam Nawaz suggested that we should employ “climate diplomacy” with India, as a means to tackle the persistent smog issue affecting our region.
