Washington: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday said that the US government has recently hired a chartered flight to send back Indian nationals staying illegally in the US back to India. The Indian Government has cooperated in this action.
A senior official of Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristie A. Canegallo, said, “Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal, and intending migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who proclaim otherwise.” She further highlighted that the government is working hard to prevent illegal entry and deportation of those who entered without proper permission in the country.
The charter flight took off to India on October 22 as part of a larger push by DHS to address illegal stays. In 2024 alone, DHS has sent more than 160,000 individuals back to their home countries on over 495 international flights to more than 145 countries, including India.
Since new border rules, the Securing the Border Presidential Proclamation and accompanying Interim Final Rule, came into effect in June 2024, illegal crossings at the southwest U.S. border have decreased by 55 percent.
The statement said that the DHS works regularly with foreign governments to handle the return of individuals who are staying illegally. Over the past year, the US has deported individuals from countries across the globe, including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Egypt, India, and China, among others. This deportation aims to reduce illegal immigration while encouraging the use of lawful pathways.
