Turkey rejects America’s highly advanced F-16 fighter jet deal, shocks US by…

New Delhi: Turkey, one of the most crucial members of the post-world war 2 alliance NATO, has made great advances in the field of military technology and military hardware. Now, according to the reports by some defence experts, Turkey has virtually jolted the powerhouse of weapons, the United States and one of the founder members of the NATO. The USA has been the pioneer and proud developer and exporter of perhaps the best and most advanced weaponry in the whole world ever since Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The American technology that even its most bitter adversaries acknowledge to be much ahead of others.

Coming back to Turkey, the country has been, for some time seeking to purchase packages from the USA to upgrade the Turkish Air Force’s existing F-16 fighter jets. Instead, Ankara plans to carry out the upgradation on its own with its own resources, developed locally in recent years.

“After lengthy negotiations earlier this year, the United States gave the green light to a deal with NATO ally Turkey for 40 new F-16 Fighting Falcon multi-role fighters and 79 modernization kits for Ankara’s existing F-16 fleet. However, this week, Turkey changed course and announced that it would abandon the purchase of the kits”, reports BulgarianMilitary.com.

Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TUSAS), the state-owned arms company, has placed itself in a strategic and significant position to carry out the updating and modernizing of F-16 Fighting Falcons.

Turkish indigenous defence manufacturing industry has made huge strides to consolidate its resourcefulness to develop several original systems that function as working equivalents to American equipment used in upgrading the F-16 jets.

This is one big step to become self-reliant thus reducing dependency on foreign players.

One of the main parts of upgrading the F-16 fleet is avionics where it will use electronic systems and equipment specifically designed for use in aviation. In this regard, Turkey has developed its Mission Computer, called the Özgün Aviyonik Sistem (OAS). The indigenous OAS system will replace the American Modular Mission Computer (MMC) and presents compliant design that is proficient in integrating new weapons and sensors.

The OAS is developed by ASELSAN, the Turkish defense corporation headquartered in Ankara. It contains open software architecture, allowing seamless upgrades over time without reliance on external technology providers. This capability will further help Turkey to integrate its own munitions which would otherwise require American certification for US provided systems.

Turkey has developed the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar technology, which is stated to be a direct competition to American systems like Northrop Grumman’s AN/APG-83 SABR.

ASELSAN’s MURAD AESA radar, which was unveiled as part of Turkey’s fifth-generation TFX project, is also being considered for retrofitting existing F-16s.

ASELSAN’s MURAD AESA radar guarantees improved range, multi-target tracking, and electronic warfare capabilities.

Talking about the cockpit, Turkey has developed advanced avionics displays and interfaces. These displays and interfaces are equal to those developed by America’s Lockheed Martin’s F-16V Block 70/72 variant.

Adding further, the advanced sensors and weapon systems made by Turkey have pushed up the new, advanced F-16s akin to their most advanced equivalents.
