New Delhi: In a massive retaliation, the Israeli Air Force made an Iranian aircraft to turn back before it could reach Lebanon. According to The Times of Israel report, the incident took place overnight between Saturday and Sunday over the Syrian airspace. There was a suspicion that the plane was carrying lethal weapons for Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israeli Defense Force fighter jets intercepted the Iranian aircraft over Syria and ordered it to return. The incident was first reported by Ynet.
The action by Israel is part of its efforts to stop Iranian weapons from Lebanon. In recent months, the Israeli Defense Forces have forced several Iranian flights to make U-turns over Syrian or Iraqi airspace, as they were all suspected of carrying weapons for Hezbollah.
According to the IDF, during the ceasefire, it would continue to take action to prevent the Lebanese terrorist group from receiving any weapons deliveries, including targeting shipments anywhere in Lebanon or Syria.
Israel Issues Warning to Syria
Last week, Israel issued a stern warn to Iran. A senior military official has stated that the IDF would not only target arms shipments but also make Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime pay the price for aiding Hezbollah.
During the initial moments of the ceasefire, in the early hours of Wednesday, the IDF launched strikes against Hezbollah’s smuggling routes. Three crossings between northern Lebanon and Syria were destroyed, which the military claimed were used for smuggling weapons to Hezbollah.
The IDF assessed that repairing the crossings would take time, leaving Hezbollah with limited routes to bring in weapons, thereby making it easier for Israel to monitor them.
How Does Hezbollah Obtain Weapons?
On Saturday, IDF fighter jets launched attack on infrastructure in Syria near the country’s border with Lebanon. It is said that these infrastructures are actively used for smuggling weapons to Hezbollah. According to the IDF, in recent years, thousands of trucks and hundreds of planes carrying missiles and other weapons for Hezbollah have traveled from Iran to Syria and later to Lebanon.
