Tel Aviv: In a major development, the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system has made its first kill on Israeli soil. THAAD intercepted a missile on Friday morning that was fired by the Houthis, targeting a part of Israel. The Israeli Arrow system also played a role in neutralizing the deadly missile attack. Notably, THAAD was deployed by the United States in Israel with a 100-member crew in October this year. The air defense system was sent by the United States to prevent Iranian attacks and ensure Israel’s security.
Missiles Destroyed In The Terminal Phase
In a video shared on social media, an American soldier can be heard saying, “I’ve waited 18 years for this.”
It is noteworthy that the THAAD air defence system was developed by the American company Lockheed Martin. Its primary aim is to destroy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles during the final phase of flight. It can be compared to Israel’s Arrow-3 defence system.

Hit-To-Kill Technology
Advanced air defence system THAAD uses ‘hit-to-kill’ technology without any warhead. It entirely relies on the kinetic energy generated from the collision with the missile. Its radar can detect and track missiles and aircraft from over 2,000 kms away, making it capable of intercepting missiles within a range of 200 kms and at an altitude of up to 150 kms.
Notably, the Houthi missile fired early Friday was intercepted before it could cross into Israeli territory.
Billion-Dollar Arms Deal Between Us And Israel
America has signed a multi-billion-dollar arms deal with Israel and also plans to enhance the country’s military infrastructure. This deal includes the transformation of a base and aircraft facility in southern Israel.
The Pentagon’s announcement of the THAAD system deployment emphasized, “This action underscores the United States’ unwavering commitment to defending Israel and protecting Americans in Israel from any ballistic missile attack by Iran.”
