A Chinese company will build the physical infrastructure for Nepal Telecom’s data centers in Bhairahawa, Rupandehi district, and Kathmandu. The tender and contract have been finalized, and the official paperwork will be completed in a week, after which construction will begin. These centers will enhance Nepal’s telecommunications services, including phone calls and internet, strengthen measures to prevent cybercrimes, and bolster surveillance capabilities.
According to a press release issued by Nepal Telecom on January 22, the total cost of the data centers in Bhairahawa and Kathmandu will amount to NPR 48.46 crore (approximately 48 crore, 46 lakh, 38 thousand, 721 rupees). The agreement has been signed with China’s Huawei Technologies Corporation Limited.
The Chinese company will provide all the physical infrastructure required for the data centers, including power supply, security systems, and connectivity. Nepal Telecom spokesperson Hari Dhakal stated that the construction process will begin a week after the agreement is finalized.
The agreement with the Chinese company sets a nine-month timeline for completing the construction. SSB’s 66th Battalion Commandant, Jagdish Prasad Dhabai, emphasized that telecommunications are critical and sensitive to national security, and higher authorities have been informed of the developments.
Indian networks in Nepal to be restricted
Several Indian telecom networks extend into Nepal, covering several kilometers of Nepalese territory. With the establishment of Nepal Telecom’s data center in Bhairahawa, Indian networks reaching into Nepal will be curtailed. Mobile phones relying on Indian networks within Nepal will also be tracked and traced.
Indian truck seized with 256 kilos of marijuana in Nepal
In a major drug bust, armed police in the eastern Nawalparasi district of Nepal seized a large amount of marijuana from an Indian truck. According to DSP Vinod Karki, the police set up a checkpoint on the highway based on a tip-off. A suspicious Indian truck traveling from east to west along the East-West Highway in Gaidakot was stopped for a search, which led to the discovery of 256 kilograms of marijuana packed in 20 packets.
The driver of the truck, identified as Pushkar Yadav from Vijay Nagar, Jharkhand, India, was arrested along with the truck. Legal action is being taken against the driver and the vehicle.
