Tehran: After Indonesia, another Muslim nation will likely relocate its capital. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is gradually sinking into the sea, prompting the government to declare its intention to move the capital to a safer location. Similarly, Iran has now decided to shift its capital from Tehran to Makran.
A government spokesperson on Tuesday announced that Iran plans to move its capital to the southern coastal region of Makran. This bold initiative is intended to tackle Tehran’s chronic issues of overpopulation, electricity shortages, and water scarcity. While government officials emphasize the strategic and economic importance of the move, critics have voiced concerns over the substantial financial burden and logistical challenges it entails.
“The new capital will definitely be in the south, in the Makran region, and we are currently working on this matter,” government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani was quoted as saying by ynetnews on Tuesday. Unlike countries such as Jordan, Kuwait, or Saudi Arabia, this nation is taking a bold step to ensure sustainable development and reduce the burden on its existing urban center.

According to Mohajerani, two committees have been formed to evaluate the feasibility of relocating the capital. She highlighted that, although the move is not an immediate priority, it is essential for experts to conduct a detailed assessment due to Tehran’s dense population and the environmental challenges confronting the city.
Tehran residents are grappling with ongoing power outages and a severe water crisis. The government spokesperson stated that while efforts are underway to resolve these issues in Tehran, the government is also considering strategies to better utilize resources in other regions of the country.
Iranian media revealed that debates over relocating the capital have resurfaced periodically since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 but were repeatedly shelved due to economic limitations and logistical hurdles. The issue gained renewed attention during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presidency, primarily due to concerns about earthquake risks in Tehran. Former President Hassan Rouhani also revisited the matter, and it is now being actively considered by the current administration led by President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The Islamic Republic plans to establish its new capital in the Makran region, situated in the Sistan and Baluchestan province along the southern coast near the Gulf of Oman. As per the reports, officials contend that the relocation offers both strategic and economic advantages, positioning the area as a potential commercial and maritime hub. This move is expected to boost Iran’s trade capabilities while alleviating the pressure on Tehran.
According to Ynetnews, critics of the plan have expressed concerns over the significant costs and logistical challenges involved in relocating the capital. They caution that the move could destabilize Tehran’s economy, potentially causing long-term damage that might take decades to recover from.

Conservative journalist Ali Gholhaki strongly criticized the proposal, questioning its feasibility. Sharing a photo of the map on X (formerly Twitter), Gholhaki wrote,”Rebuilding Azadi Stadium takes 18 months and costs 19 trillion rials ($23.75 million); how much time and money does relocating the capital require? Think over a century and hundreds of billions of dollars!”
