Officials from the Kenya Space Agency and local authorities are investigating the ring-like metallic structure that crashed into Mukuku village in Makueni County on December 30.
The space agency confirmed that a ring-like metal structure fell around 3 p.m. local time in Kenya on December 30. They described the structure as having a diameter of 2.5 meters and weighing 500 kilograms.
According to AFP reports, officials from the Kenya Space Agency, along with local authorities, took possession of the site and initiated an investigation. They praised the locals for promptly alerting them about the incident.
The Kenya Space Agency is currently working to ascertain the nature of the structure, but initially, agency officials identified it as a part of a launch vehicle, such as a rocket. They added that these components are designed to burn up upon entering Earth’s atmosphere or fall into remote areas.
The officials assured the public that there is no risk to their safety. Space junk refers to non-functional, human-made objects in space, including defunct satellites, used rocket stages, and tiny paint flakes.
