Big worry for India’s ally as China launches hypersonic missile against…, deploys nuclear submarine in… it is not Russia, US, UK

Beijing/Manila: In an alarming turn of events, tensions between China and the Philippines continue to escalate. Recent reports indicate that China is building a new submarine designed to carry nuclear hypersonic missiles, with plans to deploy it against the Philippines. The Philippines, which purchased BrahMos missiles from India, has reportedly deployed American Typhon missiles and Indian BrahMos missiles at the borders. China has also placed hypersonic missiles in response to the Philippines move.

A report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) has revealed that the submarine is being developed at a shipyard in Wuhan. It will be an attack submarine specifically designed to target medium-range missile defense systems in the Philippines.

However, it is important to note that as of now, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has not confirmed whether the development of this submarine class is underway. However, the report states that Naval and Merchant Ships, owned by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC)—which is responsible for building submarines and warships for the Chinese Navy—have been provided with detailed information regarding their design.

The SCMP report also mentions that since April 2024, the Philippines has deployed the American Typhon launcher on Luzon Island in northern Philippines, from where an attack on mainland China could be carried out.

All You Need To Know About China’s Hypersonic Missile against the Philippines

  • The submarine that China is building is capable of carrying nuclear hypersonic missiles.
  • It is believed that the new submarine will likely be equipped with the YJ-21 missile, which has also been deployed on China’s Type 093 nuclear attack submarines (SSNs).
  • The YJ-21 is a hypersonic missile that has also been stationed on China’s Type 055 cruisers.
  • The estimated range of this missile is between 1,500 to 2,000 kilometers, and it has a speed of approximately Mach 10.
  • Speculations suggest that this submarine is expected to feature Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.

It is important to note that Philippines has deployed the American Typhon missile system against China, which has significantly increased tensions in the region. In September 2024, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that the deployment of the Typhon missile “undermines regional peace and stability.” He warned that this deployment is “not in the interest of regional countries.”

However, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro hit back at this remark, saying that China is using “reverse psychology” to prevent the Philippines from building its defense capabilities.
