Russia-Ukraine war: In a major statement that could have far-reaching implications on the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told his US counterpart Donald Trump that his country does not just need a ceasefire, claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin has violated the same on over two dozens occasions.
“We don’t just need a ceasefire. We’ve done that before — Putin violated it 25 times, including during your presidency, Mr. President,” the Kyiv Post quoted Zelenskyy as saying, indicating that he was not on board with Trump’s ceasefire call.
‘If you get a ceasefire, take it’
The Ukrainian President termed Trump meeting him before holding talks with Putin a “good signal”, but opposed Washington’s ceasefire proposal, even as Trump had stated “Zelensky will have to make compromises”. Zelenskyy also asked whether “America will stop military aid” to Ukraine, according to the Kyiv Post.
“If you can get a ceasefire right now, I tell you, you take it – so the bullets stop flying and your men stop getting killed,” Trump has reportedly told his Ukrainian counterpart, according to Al Jazeera.
“Of course we want to stop the war,” Zelenskyy replied, adding that he wants security guarantees before Ukraine can commit to any ceasefire agreement.
“You’ll get a ceasefire faster than an agreement,” Trump responded.
‘Look, who’s all dressed up’
Meanwhile. earlier in the day, Donald Trump welcomed Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday, quipping “he’s all dressed up today”, as the Ukrainian President was seen donning a formal black t-shirt, instead of his signature military green T-shirt.
“Oh look, he’s all dressed up today!” the US President said as he welcomed his Ukrainian counterpart in Washington DC.
Zelenskyy’s high-stakes meeting with Trump comes amid the US President push to sign a rare earth material deal with Ukraine, with Trump actively talking about ending the Russia- Ukraine war “soon”, and holding talks with several Western leaders on the matter.
Donald Trump said that his plan to sign a rare earth minerals deal with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday is “really going to get us into that country”, adopting a softer views about the Ukrainian President than earlier, when he had called him a “dictator without elections”.
‘Dictator’ Zelenskyy fooled US
Trump also accused his Ukrainian counterpart of persuading the United States to invest billions of dollars in a war he believed could not be won, questioning the allocation of resources and Europe’s lack of equal financial contribution.
“Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 billion dollars, to go into a war that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a war that he, without the US and “TRUMP,” will never be able to settle,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.
“The United States has spent $200 billion dollars more than Europe, and Europe’s money is guaranteed, while the United States will get nothing back. Why didn’t sleepy Joe Biden demand equalization, in that this war is far more important to Europe than it is to us — We have a big, beautiful ocean as separation. On top of this, Zelenskyy admits that half of the money we sent him is “MISSING.” He refuses to have elections, is very low in Ukrainian polls, and was only good at playing Biden ‘like a fiddle.’ A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a country left.” he added.
