New Delhi: With the entry of Donald Trump as the President of the United States of America, a tariff war has started between the US and countries like China, Canada, and Mexico. To recall, Trump had earlier issued a warning to BRICS nations, following which it was said that a sense of concern was building in India. However, reports now suggest that India and the United States are resolving issues through dialogue, and the chances of India being significantly affected by the tariff war are low.
A person familiar with the matter told Hindustan Times that India prioritizes any issues raised by its allies. Additionally, India gives special strategic importance to the United States. He also mentioned that no specific trade issue was raised by Washington.
“Washington has warned the BRICS countries, of which India is a member along with Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa. However, India is not part of such a decision,” he said. “The relationship between India and the United States is based on mutual trust.” He further stated that New Delhi is not considering any steps that could cause problems for Washington.
Another expert, while talking to the newspaper on the matter, said that with Trump’s return, India has signaled its intent to work with the US on every issue related to illegal immigration and trade. He mentioned that Trump has warned of imposing a 100 percent tariff on the BRICS group, raising concerns about the potential impact on India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also spoken with Trump and discussed issues related to global peace and security. PM Modi had stated that India is committed to a mutually beneficial and reliable partnership for both parties.
