Trouble for Pakistan’s army chief General Syed Asim Munir mounts after junior officers have adopted a rebellious attitude against him and have demanded his resignation. While demanding this, the officers have written a scathing letter, in which they accused Munir of using the army as a tool for political oppression and personal revenge. According to a report in CNN-News 18, this letter has been written by officers of the rank of Colonel, Major and Captain.
It criticised Munir’s leadership, saying that it has pushed Pakistan into the abyss. Munir’s leadership has been compared to 1971, when Pakistan suffered a catastrophic defeat, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.
Warning to General Munir
In a hard hitting letter, they warned, “This is not an appeal. This is not a compromise negotiation. This is your 1971 General and we will not let you be buried in this shadow.” The officials accused Munir of destroying the reputation of the army by suppressing political dissent, silencing journalists and crushing democratic forces. It highlights the violent action after the removal of Imran Khan in April 2022 and the alleged manipulation of the February 8, 2024 elections as decisive moments that have tarnished the credibility of the army.
Officials accused Munir of driving the country to economic ruin to save his power. “The economy has become a corpse and yet you roam around the headquarters like a dictator, extending your term to 2027 while we are dying of hunger.”
It also mentions the public’s anger against the army. The letter says, “Children throw stones at our posts. You have made the Pakistani army a stranger on its own land.” The officers have compared the Army Chief to a fascist beast who is feasting at the expense of his own people.
The report, citing top intelligence sources, confirmed the letter and called it an existential crisis for Pakistan’s most powerful institution, the army. The letter warned that if Munir does not step down, the army will take action itself. The officers have demanded that the command of the army be handed over to a council of senior officers who will restore the integrity of the institution and hold Munir accountable for his alleged crimes.
Will Munir be overthrown?
The letter described the hijacking of the Jaffar Express train by fighters of the separatist organization BLA in Balochistan as a humiliating moment. “We lost Balochistan that day, we lost our dignity. The officers also criticized Munir’s leadership for failing to maintain the traditional honor of the army.” This internal rebellion in the Pakistani army indicates weakening power. In the letter, the officers have made it clear that if Munir does not leave the post, they will take action.
