Dhaka: Bankrupt Bangladesh has been facing serious political turmoil ever since Muhammad Yunus took charge of the government after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as the prime minister of the country. Speculations about the imposition of military rule and a state of emergency are also gaining momentum. Amid these circumstances, the head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, arrived in China’s Henan province on Wednesday.

Mohammad Yunus Wanted to Visit India
Mohammad Yunus had initially wanted to visit Delhi, and had also sent a request for this, but after receiving no response from the Modi government, he decided to travel to China instead. Now, Dhaka is hopeful that a meeting between Chief Advisor Yunus and Prime Minister Narendra Modi could take place at the BIMSTEC Summit, scheduled to be held in Bangkok on April 3-4.
Bangladesh Awaiting India’s Response
Mohammad Jashim Uddin, Bangladesh’s foreign secretary, has stated that they are fully prepared for the meeting and are awaiting a positive response from India. To recall, the Muhammad Yunus government had turned a blind eye when minorities, especially Hindus, were targeted by radical groups in Bangladesh. The atrocities were reported after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
New Delhi strongly condemned these incidents, emphasizing that protecting minorities should be the interim government’s top priority. However, extremist forces in Bangladesh continue to grow stronger, and the situation for minorities has not improved yet.
Since Muhammad Yunus took charge of the office, the interim government has made every effort to strengthen ties with Pakistan and China in foreign affairs while neglecting its deep diplomatic relations with India. Chaos has begun to spread at the grassroots level in the country. People are taking to the streets with various demands.
Political Conflict Escalates in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has been witnessing a massive political conflict ever since the interim government took charge. The unity among various political organizations that emerged during the removal of the democratically elected Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024 is now gradually weakening. On Monday night, a violent clash between two parties in Bangladesh’s Noakhali district left several people injured.
