Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) directed Pam Bondi, the Attorney General, to examine the actions of attorneys and law firms that the administration believes to have filed frivolous lawsuits against the Trump administration or have attempted to block immigration efforts.
In a late-night memorandum, Trump revisited past grudges against lawyers who have opposed him and vowed to punish lawyers and law firms by revoking security clearances and cancelling federal contracts they hold. The move broadened Trump’s crackdown on the legal community in the US, as per CNN.

It also directs Bondi “to review conduct by attorneys or their law firms in litigation against the Federal Government over the last 8 years” to determine and recommend to the president “additional steps that may be taken, including reassessment of security clearances held by the attorney, termination of any contract for which the relevant attorney or law firm has been hired to perform services, or any other appropriate actions,” as per CNN.
The precise effect of the memo remains uncertain, as its vague wording does not specify what actions could lead to penalties for lawyers and law firms. The memo primarily addresses attorneys working on immigration cases and instructs the attorney general to submit complaints regarding misconduct against lawyers deemed to have behaved inappropriately by the administration. Recently, Trump’s focus on the legal sector seems to have resulted in concessions from at least one prominent law firm.
