Washington: In a major revelation, a US intelligence report said that Iran is not currently building nuclear weapons. To recall, it was earlier claimed that Iran had enriched enough uranium to produce six nuclear bombs. Highly enriched uranium is required to make nuclear bombs. The report also states that Russia is developing a new satellite capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which could have “catastrophic consequences” for the US and the world.
The Wall Street Journal recently stated that, according to a confidential United Nations report, Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of highly enriched uranium in recent weeks. The report accused Iran of accumulating a key raw material for nuclear weapons. It was mentioned that due to the increase in Iran’s uranium stockpile to 60 percent or nearly weapons-grade levels, it is sufficient to build six nuclear weapons.
United States Had Provided Nuclear Technology to Iran
Iran’s nuclear activities began in the 1950s, with the assistance of the United States. However, at that time, Iran was ruled by Shah Pahlavi. Back then, Iran’s nuclear activities were for peaceful purposes. But now, the United States wants to shut down Iran’s nuclear program. In 1967, Iran established a 5-megawatt research reactor at Tehran University and obtained 93% enriched uranium fuel from the United States.
Iran denies making nuclear bombs
The nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed in July 2015, but in May 2018, Trump withdrew from it, and in response, Iran gradually reduced its “nuclear commitments” and came closer to acquiring a nuclear bomb. Tehran claims that its nuclear activities are “peaceful” and that the production and use of weapons of mass destruction are condemned in Islam.
