Washington: Protesters who gathered outside Tesla dealerships across the United States and Europe raised their voices against Elon Musk’s involvement in the US government, Al Jazeera reported. The richest person in the world, who is currently serving as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is facing criticism for his efforts to cut US government spending and for having access to highly sensitive data.
Organised protests, involving Tesla owners, celebrities, and a Democratic politician, are demanding Elon Musk’s resignation from his government role. These demonstrations, the first nationwide coordinated effort targeting all Tesla dealerships, represent a significant escalation of pressure on Musk.
In New York City, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Manhattan Tesla store, demanding Musk’s resignation. These demonstrations coincide with a decline in Tesla sales, which the organizers hope to exacerbate further.
Environmental activists from Planet Over Profit organized a protest, arguing that opposing Elon Musk’s actions is crucial for public safety and democratic preservation. Al Jazeera reported that Amy Neifeld, a 70-year-old psychologist and veteran anti-Vietnam War protester, views Musk’s leadership as a threat to American democracy, likening it to fascism.
“I’m Jewish, and I grew up with a deep awareness of what fascism is. And it’s only gotten worse since the election” of Donald Trump,” she told the AFP news agency.
“We have to do something very quickly because he’s moving very quickly,” Neifeld added.
In London, about two dozen protesters held signs lambasting Musk outside a Tesla dealership as passing cars and trucks tooted horns in support.
One of the signs displayed at the London protest showed a photo of Musk next to an image of Adolf Hitler making the Nazi salute — a gesture that Musk has been accused of reprising shortly after Trump’s January 20 inauguration.
Tesla has faced acts of vandalism, including arson, from opponents of Elon Musk. These actions, described by Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as “domestic terrorism,” prompted Musk to express surprise and condemnation at a company meeting in March 2023.
