Dallas: Thousands of people marched through Downtown Dallas, protesting against United States President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. They demanded the immediate release of students detained by the immigration department, CNN reported. The protesters were seen holding American flags as a symbol of unity. The mega march started from a cathedral and ended at City Hall. A 60-year-old marcher, Daniel Beltran, spoke about highlighting the issue and catching the authorities’ attention “in a good way.” Daniel said he wanted to show the authorities that they’re “good people” seeking a better life.
“We need to catch the attention of the authorities in a good way because we’re good people,” Beltran said, adding, “Most of us, we come here because we want a better life.”
According to CNN, many protesters carried signs specifically referencing Mahmoud Khalil, Khan Suri and Rumeysa Ozturk, all foreign national students at prestigious US universities arrested for what the Trump administration claims were activities related to terrorist organizations.
After reaching city hall, the crowd recited the pledge of allegiance, and a mariachi performer led the group in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Former LULAC National President Hector Flores lauded the vital contributions of Latinos to the state, emphasizing their importance across numerous sectors such as architecture, art, culinary arts, healthcare, education, and science.
“We build the buildings. We paint the murals. We cook the meals from every culture and every corner of this country. We are the architects, the artisans, the chefs, the caregivers, the teachers, the scientists,” Flores said.
Meanwhile, during his campaign for Trump’s second term, he outlined an assertive plan for his second term, pledging sweeping policy changes and controversial actions on immigration, criminal justice, and executive leadership.
Donald Trump reiterated his intention to overhaul immigration laws, specifically targeting the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship clause. He plans to abolish this constitutional right, which grants citizenship to all those born in the US regardless of their parents’ immigration status.
Although legal experts widely consider this unconstitutional, Trump suggested exploring executive actions or constitutional amendments to achieve this goal, even potentially through a public referendum. His assertion that the US is unique in offering birthright citizenship is inaccurate; at least 34 other countries have similar policies.
