Typhon System: The relations between the USA and china have been everything but cordial, let alone being at the comfort level that the world would expect from two of the world’s biggest powerhouses. The trust deficit is immense and geopolitics is not helping the cause either. South China Sea, India-Pacific region, QUAD that contains only Australia, India, Japan, and the United States, and every bit of diplomacy in the immediate regions that concern and connect to these two countries.
There have been numerous “show of strength” by both sides as they used military and economy alike to outdo each other, not to forget the desire to outfoxing each other and emerge as the world leader.
According to reports, now the United States Army is going to perform a live-fire testing of the deadly Typhon Mid-Range Capability (MRC) system whose long-drawn-out deployment in the Philippines has made China furious.
Typhon, also commonly referred to as the “Strategic Mid-range Fires System” (SMRF), is a United States Army transporter erector launcher for Standard SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles. The US Army plans to conduct live firing from its Typhon missile system in the upcoming Talisman Sabre drills, say the sources. However, there is no official confirmation about the same.
Talisman Sabre Exercise is a biennial, large-scale, multinational military exercise primarily between Australia and the United States, designed to enhance combined capabilities and interoperability across sea, land, air, cyber, and space domains.
It is a biennial event that is held every two years with the last one being held in 2023. This year, the Talisman Sabre Exercise is being held from March 29 to April 5. The information received so far suggests that the live-fire testing of the Typhon system during the Talisman Sabre Exercise will be the first time the Typhon system would be used on foreign soil. The Typhon system was previously fired on US territory like in 2023 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and earlier at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
The Talisman Sabre drills will include live-firing drills, amphibious landings, air combat, marine operations, and ground force manoeuvers. The live firing test of Typhon holds an extremely important and strategic place as it will show a key attack capability for the US and its allies in the Indo-Pacific, that too amid rising tensions with China.
It is worth mentioning that the Chinese People’s Liberation Navy (PLAN) had recently caused a lot of flutter as it conducted live-fire drills near Australia and New Zealand without giving adequate notice to the two countries. In fact, experts said that these exercises constituted an unprecedented show of force, demonstrating Beijing’s increased willingness and capacity to project power beyond its maritime boundaries.
Hence it is being a given that the USA wants to get even with China.
The American Army had in April 2024 deployed the Typhon ground-based missile system in Luzon, the Philippines. However, almost a year later, the US Army is yet to remove the long-range missile system from the territory deemed as explosive and volatile.
A livid China has fiercely condemned the Typhon deployment and accused the Philippines and the USA of provoking regional tensions and Beijing has regularly called for the withdrawal of the system from the country.
The Typhon system that is currently based in Luzon, Philippines, can hit China’s strategic military targets on Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea and the southeast coast of mainland China apart from Chinese marine targets and artificial outposts across the South China Sea.
