After a strong earthquake was reported near the coast of Russia, and now several countries have given tsunami warnings. Big waves between 3 to 4 metres (around 10 to 13 feet) have already hit parts of eastern Russia, especially in the Kamchatka region, according to local media reports. In the United States, warnings were given for Alaska and Hawaii. The U.S. tsunami center said waves as high as 3 metres (around 10 feet) might reach both Hawaii and parts of Russia.
Japan’s weather agency also warned people along its Pacific coast, saying waves up to 1 metre (about 3 feet) could reach the shore.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center quickly issued a “tsunami watch” for Hawaii. Local officials there said the earthquake could be strong enough to cause dangerous waves.
So far, there have been no reports of damage. Authorities are keeping a close watch and asking people to stay alert.

Where did the earthquake happen?
The powerful earthquake struck near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, a large area in the country’s far east. The quake’s center was about 136 km (around 85 miles) east of Petropavlovsk, the main city in Kamchatka.
The earthquake was very strong. It was first measured at magnitude 8.0, but later upgraded to 8.7. It happened about 30 minutes before midnight GMT and was recorded at a depth of 19 km, which means it was a shallow earthquake. Shallow quakes those less than 70 km deep can cause stronger shaking and are more likely to trigger tsunamis.
Even though there’s no detailed update yet on the damage in Kamchatka, authorities in several countries are watching closely.
A seismologist from the University of Tokyo, Shinichi Sakai, told Japanese broadcaster NHK that shallow earthquakes far away can still cause tsunamis that reach Japan. This quake fits that pattern.
The earthquake was also about 250 km (160 miles) from Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands. People in Japan felt it slightly, according to NHK.
Japan lies in a very active area for earthquakes called the Pacific Ring of Fire, and it’s one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
