New Delhi: The calls for dividing Pakistan into 12 provinces are surging on social media in the country. It is believed that this division will improve the development of the whole of Pakistan, and no province will remain untouched by development. The people of Balochistan are particularly happy about this.
People of Balochistan are very happy with the idea
A website named Balochistan Pulse says that dividing Pakistan into 12 provinces is the key to solving its governance and development challenges. Discussions are being held on the growing debate about the creation of new provinces in Pakistan. There is a festive atmosphere in Balochistan about this.
With the proposal to divide Punjab into four regions and Balochistan into four regions, many people argue that this reorganization can improve the distribution of resources, governance and national unity. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has been demanding independence from Pakistan for a long time, on which Pakistan has got sanctions imposed by the USA.
How many provinces are there in Pakistan right now?
At present, there are a total of four provinces in Pakistan – Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. At the same time, Islamabad is considered a federal capital region. Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Gilgit-Baltistan are also administrative areas, which are considered different from the provinces.
The demand for creation of new provinces has been rising for a long time
Recently there has been a flood of seminars, media discussions and sharp comments on the idea of increasing the number of provinces in Pakistan on social media. Some organisations have proposed converting the existing 32 administrative divisions into provinces, while another recommendation is to revert to the original 12 administrative divisions that existed in the then West Pakistan at the time of independence.
The broad conclusion of these proposals is that once we have more provinces, practically all our administrative problems will be solved. Although various political parties have advocated the creation of new provinces for various reasons in the past, the current proposals clearly demand a greater number of provinces to facilitate the transfer of power and achieve administrative efficiency.
Why creating 12 provinces is almost impossible?
If 12 provinces are created in Pakistan, then each new province will have to pay a heavy price as taxpayers will have to pay for eight new provincial assemblies, governors, chief ministers, cabinets, high courts, public service commissions, civil secretariats, etc. as well as the necessary physical infrastructure, etc. Such wasteful expenditure is not acceptable under any circumstances, and in the current economic scenario it would be almost criminal. It will be nearly impossible to achieve a two-thirds majority in the assemblies.
