China has accomplished yet again, another wonder. After constructing its Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydroelectric power station, the country has now built the world’s tallest bridge, called the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge.
Where is the world’s tallest bridge located?
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in China, measuring an impressive 625 meters high, has passed its final test before being opened to the public. The bridge, located in beautiful karst mountains in Guizhou Province, is known as an “unprecedented engineering miracle.” It passed its static load test between 21 and 25 August, as reported by China Daily.
A load test was performed on the bridge from August 21-25. To ensure it is completely safe and has the capacity to take heavy weights, they drove on 96 large trucks. Each truck weighed roughly 35 tons. So the total load placed on the bridge was almost 3,360 tons at once. To put it in simpler terms, assuming the average weight of an Indian elephant is about 4 tons, the load test was like placing around 840 elephants on the bridge.
Over 400 sensors measured every aspect of the bridge’s main span, towers, cables, and suspenders to record any movement, while maintaining the assurance of structural safety. The engineers confirmed that the bridge is strong, stiff, and performs safely.
How long is the bridge, and what is the length of its main span?
The trucks were stationed in various locations to test the bridge’s strength in diverse conditions. More than 400 sensors were installed that measured every micro and macro movement during the test.
When will the bridge officially open to the public?
With an overall total length of 2,900 meters, with a main span of 1,420 meters, and with a height of 625 meters above the canyon floor, the bridge will be the world’s tallest and longest-span bridge in a mountain region, after it is opened.
According to the media reports, the bridge is reportedly higher than the tallest building in the United States, One World Trade Center.
Project manager Wu Zhaoming of Guizhou Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd. faced numerous challenges during construction, such as keeping the temperature under control for massive concrete pours, stabilizing the steep canyon slopes, and mitigating the impact of the extremely strong winds. In spite of these challenges, the team was able to finish the project early, delivering the largest-span bridge in mountainous topography.
