New Delhi: Russia has built a spy base in Kaliningrad, in the heart of Europe. Kaliningrad is located between Poland and Lithuania. Recent satellite images and open-source analysis indicate the construction of a massive intelligence complex in the region. This complex will be one of Europe’s most important electronic surveillance installations in Russia’s militarised Kaliningrad region. This may raise NATO’s concern as the region is located between NATO members Poland and Lithuania.
According to a Firstpost report, satellite images claim that Russia has built a spy base in Kaliningrad, while a Cold War-era-style antenna array has been set up in the Chernyakhovsk district, and it has been modernised for today’s electronic warfare requirements. However, Russia has not confirmed this base at NATO’s gate.
Work started in 2023
Investigators of the open-source research project have been studying developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict for the past two years. They say that this base in Kaliningrad began to take shape in March 2023 and is growing rapidly. Located south of an airbase of the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet, the base is located 60 miles from the Baltic Sea coast.
Satellite images reveal a pattern that such complexes are capable of radio signal interception, direction determination, long-distance communication with submarines and monitoring the activities of opposing forces. At present, a boundary wall has been built around the site, a checkpoint for control at the entry gate and at least six circles visible on the ground.
Why is this base important?
If this surveillance base of Russia becomes operational, the Kaliningrad complex will increase Moscow’s electronic surveillance capability in the eastern part of NATO. It is less than 100 km from Poland and Lithuania. In such a situation, it will provide direct access to monitor activities inside the NATO alliance area. The range of such an array will enable it to cover the communications of parts of Germany.
From this site, Russia will be able to monitor strategic broadcasts, radar networks and civilian infrastructure across the NATO alliance. It can capture battlefield-level broadcasts, signals from radar systems and logistics channels. Defence experts say that the ability to interfere with or jam NATO’s command and communication networks can prove decisive in a conflict.
Heavy military deployment in Kaliningrad
Kaliningrad is no ordinary Russian region. Being Moscow’s westernmost region, it serves as a strategic outpost for power projection in the Baltic Sea. A dense network of Russia’s missile systems, radar stations and strong military infrastructure is present here. NATO countries consider it a region that is capable of threatening sea and air routes in northern Europe.
