A major earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck the Sindirgi district of Turkiye’s western Balikesir province on Monday night, Anadolu Agency reported, citing the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
According to AFAD, the earthquake hit the western province of Balikesir at 10:48 local time (1948GMT). The quake was measured at a depth of 5.99 kilometres (3.72 miles) and was also felt in provinces around the region, including Istanbul.
According to the Anadolu Agency report, Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said on Turkish social media platform NSosyal, “AFAD and other relevant institutions have begun field inspections, and reports are being carefully reviewed,” as reported by news agency ANI.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also released a statement saying, ““I extend my condolences to the citizens affected by the earthquake that occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir and was also felt in our neighboring provinces.”
“Our AFAD, along with the relevant units, is meticulously continuing inspection and control efforts in the field,” he further stated, The Sun reported. While speaking to the state-run Anadolu Agency, Sindirgi’s district administrator Dogukan Koyuncu stated,” So far, we have not identified any loss of life, but we are continuing our assessment.”
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that at least three unoccupied buildings and a two-story shop fell in Sindirgi. He said the buildings had been damaged from an earlier earthquake. He noted that two people were taken to the hospital due to panic- related falls. According to Balikesir Governor Ismail Ustaoglu, 22 people sustained injuries from panic-related falls, which occur because of earthquake physical and psychological effects.
