Tensions between India and Pakistan have intensified following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 innocent people. On the other hand, India had executed a calibrated response against terror targets during Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
Who did Pakistan credit for its weapons’ performance during Operation Sindoor?
Under these unprecedented circumstances, Pakistan has now made a shocking statement. Pakistan claimed that Chinese-made weapons “performed exceptionally well” during the four-day war with India in May. The remarks came from the Director General of the Pakistani Army propaganda organization, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, in an interview with Bloomberg. General Chaudhry made the country’s claims even as India declared to have shot down Pakistan’s PL-15 missiles during Operation Sindoor, proving the greater strike capability of Indian weapons.
During an interview with Bloomberg, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated, “We are open to all sorts of technology.” He further added,”Of course lately, recent Chinese platforms, they’ve demonstrated exceptionally well.”
The May conflict involved Pakistan’s first significant use of modern Chinese-built systems, including upgrading its inventory to J-10C fighters, which Islamabad claimed destroyed several Indian aircraft, including French-made Rafale. The performance of the systems has faced considerable scrutiny in the aftermath of the encounter. It is to be noted that India has on several occasions rejected Pakistan’s claims of downing several Indian fighter jets.
The clash saw days of missile exchanges and aerial strikes between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, culminating in a ceasefire declared on May 10. While both countries claimed victory, their versions of events varied.
At least a dozen Pakistani military aircraft including US-origin F-16 jets were destroyed or damaged in Indian strikes during Operation Sindoor, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A P Singh said on Friday while describing Islamabad’s narrative on India’s losses as “fanciful stories” (‘Manohar Kahaniyan’).
The Air Chief Marshal also said that Indian action damaged a large number of military installations in Pakistan that included hangars in three locations, radars in at least four places, command and control centres in two sites and runways in two air bases. India has shown the world how it not only destroyed Pakistan’s terrorist camps but also targeted and demolished their air bases.
During the four-day India-Pakistan conflict in May, Pakistan widely deployed advanced Chinese-made weapons such as PL-15 missiles, HQ-9P surface-to-air missiles, and JF-17 and J-10 fighter jets. However, India’s air defense systems neutralized these Chinese weapons in mid-air. During the operation, India demonstrated its superior military capability with the performance of its BrahMos supersonic missiles and Akashtir air defense systems.
During his discussion with Bloomberg, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry reported that Pakistan had shot down seven Indian fighter jets, increasing the tally from a previous count of six, and further claimed that India did not shoot down any Pakistani planes. However, Pakistan has failed to substantiate claims of downing Indian jets with evidence; India has presented concrete proof before the world, showcasing the scale of destruction inflicted on Pakistan.
“Pakistan has never tried to play with figures and facts,” General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.
The conflict signified the largest battlefield use of Chinese weaponry in recent history, as the J-10C fighter jets and PL-15 air-to-air missiles were used in live combat for the very first time. This deployment of Chinese weapons has received close attention among regional powers, especially China’s strategic rivals, as Beijing continues major investments in next-generation defense technology and increases its military footprint across Asia.
