Bangladesh on high alert ahead of ICT verdict, government issues ‘Shoot at Sight’ order, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League calls nationwide shutdown

New Delhi: The situation in Bangladesh has been deteriorating ever since Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign as prime minister. The Muhammad Yunus government has failed miserably to maintain peace in the country. Under his leadership, Hindus in Bangladesh have faced severe persecution. However, after months of turmoil, elections have now been announced in the country.

Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh will be held in February 2026. It is important to note that former PM Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country on 5 August 2024 after the coup, is still living in India. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will deliver its verdict today on the charges against Sheikh Hasina and her close associates. In protest, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party has called for a nationwide shutdown in Bangladesh. At the same time, the country is on high alert due to fears of violence. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjad Ali has issued shoot-on-sight orders for anyone found engaging in violence.

Sheikh Hasina questions the Yunus government

Former PM Sheikh Hasina has launched a scathing attack on Muhammad Yunus and accused him of committing crimes against humanity during the protests that took place in July–August in Bangladesh. Ahead of the verdict, Sheikh Hasina has also targeted interim government chief Muhammad Yunus.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Sheikh Hasina attacked Yunus, saying that Bangladesh is being influenced by extremist ideology through alliances with terrorist organizations.

Speaking about leaving Bangladesh, Hasina said, “It was extremely painful for me to leave my motherland. All the steps we had taken for economic development have been destroyed, but I have full faith in the people of Bangladesh. They will choose democracy.”

What did she say about the coup in Bangladesh?

Sheikh Hasina said, “Destroying my father’s historic home was an attempt to wipe out the legacy of the hard-fought struggle for Bangladesh’s independence. Many people sacrificed their lives for our golden future. I believe the people of Bangladesh will never forget their heritage.”

Attacking the Yunus government, Sheikh Hasina said:

“This is an illegitimate government. I even doubt whether the elections scheduled for February will actually take place. This election is nothing but a show. A conspiracy has been crafted to make an unconstitutional government look constitutional. Ever since Yunus came to power, minorities have been targeted. There is no place for religious discrimination in our country.”
